Heirloom or Decorative Pillowcase: Ruffles, Piping and Lace Insertion
Technique / Description:
This month’s class we will make a decorative pillowcase, adding serger applied decorative stitching to the pillowcase cuff. Using ribbon and lace block techniques from prior classes with gathers and edging in the ruffles, you can easily create a decorative pillowcase.
Featured stitches: 2 or 3 thread rolled hem, 3 and 4 thread overlock stitches, cover stitches (optional)

Fabric, Ribbon and Thread Requirements:
3/4 yard of main body fabric
3/4 yard pillow cuff material including ruffle
4 spools serger thread to match main body
2 spools serger or embroidery thread to match cuff
1 spool machine embroidery thread to match band/ruffle
1 ¼ yard wide ribbon or lace insertion (2+ “ wide)
If using satin ribbon the thread through ladder trim: 1 ¼ yard ladder trim and 1 ½ yard satin ribbon to thread through the ladder trim (see photo page 90)
Notions requirements for this project:
-Tailors chalk for marking linen
- Best Press or other good fabric starch – it is important to starch the linen well before cutting and then again before you sew/serge on it! I suggest prewashing the linen.
-Large eye embroidery needle for threading and hiding the serger threads
-Fraycheck
-Rotary cutter with new blade and at least 18” ruler
-Bodkin to weave ribbon through insertion tape, if using
Standard Notions Required:
1. Your serger, power cord, foot control, all accessories and the manual. If yoLineu don't have the manual, please download and print one from the internet. It is a great resource. Be sure to bring the tool that allows you to change the needle. It is either a tiny flathead screwdriver or a tiny Allen wrench. If you don’t have it, try to replace it before class.
2. Standard sewing supplies : Rotary cutter, scissors, rotary cutter rulers (6x18, 2.5 x 12), seam ripper, Best Press or other fabric spray starch, Fraycheck (for sealing ends of threads), pins or clips
3. Long tweezers (these come with every new serger, but if yours has wandered off, please be sure you bring one!) They are your best friend when threading a serger!
