Know your Serger: Linen Napkins 4 ways.
Technique / Description:
This month’s class we will focus on several ways to make your own personalized linen napkins. We will make 4 to 5 different types: frayed edge, rolled or picot hem, hemmed with 1,2 or 3 coverstitch, flatlock hemmed and a circular overlock napkins. If there is time, we will make a circular napkin folded to mimic a tree or witch’s hat.
Featured stitches: 2 - thread overlock and its variations, flatlock, chainstitch, 1, 2, or 3 thread coverstitch, rolled or picot hem stitch
Fabric Requirements:
-2 yards of linen – I suggest 1 yard each of 2 colors (Cheryl has white, off-white and black available)
- two coordinating cotton fabrics to make a tree or witch’s hat circular napkin
-Extra lightweight fabric to practice with
Thread requirements:
-4 spools serger cone thread to match fabrics (overlock)
-3 spools contrasting color of embroidery or other decorative thread (flatlock, chainstitch, coverstitch, rolled hems)
Notions requirements for this project:
-Best Press or other good fabric starch – it is important to starch the linen well before cutting and then again before you sew/serge on it! I suggest prewashing the linen.
-Large eye embroidery needle for threading and hiding the serger threads
-Fraycheck
-Rotary cutter with new blade and at least 18” ruler
-Size 70 and size 80 needles for your serger needles (linen is lightweight)
Standard Notions Required:
1. Your serger, power cord, foot control, all accessories and the manual. If yoLineu don't have the manual, please download and print one from the internet. It is a great resource. Be sure to bring the tool that allows you to change the needle. It is either a tiny flathead screwdriver or a tiny Allen wrench. If you don’t have it, try to replace it before class.
2. Standard sewing supplies : Rotary cutter, scissors, rotary cutter rulers (6x18, 2.5 x 12), seam ripper, Best Press or other fabric spray starch, Fraycheck (for sealing ends of threads), pins or clips
3. Long tweezers (these come with every new serger, but if yours has wandered off, please be sure you bring one!) They are your best friend when threading a serger!
