Technique / Description:
Quilting with the serger can be fast, easy, and fun. Turn utility stitches into decorative stitches for textured quilt blocks and decorative elements, quilt the layers using heavier weight threads and a chain stitch, and assemble with quilt as you go (QAYG) techniques. Change out the fabric colors to coordinate with your home or any special occasion.
Featured stitches: 4- thread overlock, chainstitch, flatlock wide, 2-Thread Wrapped Overlock
Book/Pattern: Power Serge by Pam Damour and Betty Mitchell
Fabric Requirements:
Fabric A 1 yard blue
Fabric B ¼ yard silver or light
Fabric C ½ light background
Fabric D ½ yard red
Batting ? yard
½ yard fusible web
Thread requirements:
4 spools serger cone thread to match fabrics for piecing
2 matching spools 12wt decorative thread for chainstitch quilting
1 spool 12wt thread in contrasting color for flatlock serging
½ yard length of contrasting yarn and/or ribbon
Pre-Class Homework: Cut as follows
Fabric A (blue fabric)
(1) 4” x 12” (circle applique) – fuse web to back of fabric
(1) 11” x 21” (center backing)
(1) 1 ½" x 14” (prairie points)
(2) 10” x 6” (backing ends)
(2) 5 ½" x 5 ½" (front pieced ends)
Fabric B (silver/light fabric)
(1) 4” x 12” (circle applique’) – fuse web to back of fabric
(1) 1.5” x 14” (prairie points)
Fabric C (background fabric)
(1) 10” x 21” (main front)
(1) 7 ½" x 12” (pieced ends)
Fabric D (red)
(1) 2 ½" x 21” (pieced ends)
(1) 4” x 12” (circle applique’) – fuse web to back of fabric
(2) 2 ¼" x WOF (binding)
Batting
(1) 11” x 22
(2) 10” x 6”
Notions Required:
1. Your serger, power cord, foot control, all accessories and the manual. If you don't have the manual, please download and print one from the internet. It is a great resource. Be sure to bring the tool that allows you to change the needle. It is either a tiny flathead screwdriver or a tiny Allen wrench. If you don’t have it, try to replace it before class.
2. Standard sewing supplies : Rotary cutter, scissors, rotary cutter rulers (6x18, 2.5 x 12), seam ripper, Best Press or other fabric spray starch, Fraycheck (for sealing ends of threads)
3. Long tweezers (these come with every new serger, but if yours has wandered off, please be sure you bring one!) They are your best friend when threading a serger!
